Getting to know about Cupping Therapy

Cupping is a common modality of healing within Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM practitioners use therapies such as acupuncture with needles, moxibustion, Gua Sha (Scraping) and cupping to remove any stagnations of invasive pathogens – wind, cold, heat or dampness – that could alter the life energy in the body, known as Qi. Such interruptions in the flow of Qi and blood can alter a person’s wellness, which may result in a loss of function, or sensation, pain, and cause of other possibly disease.

The markings that result from cupping represent the release of these invasive materials. After multiple treatments, the intensity of their colour will typically lessen, indicating the progressive removal of such materials from the body.

It has been thought that the darker the colours, the deeper or more severe the stagnation.

· How should you feel during the cupping process?

Many people have described the feeling of having cups applied to their body in many different ways. Some of the feeling described are soothing, penetrating, warming, feels like deep tissue massage. Some may feel itchy after cupping in the area.

Here’s what some of my patients feedback after the treatment: “ I can finally feel my shoulder.”

"My head feels lighter now." “My skin feels so much loosen now.” "I could feel the warm, and blood flowing through the body."

· What does the cupping colour mean?

1 Light Red or Pink speckling New, more superficial stagnations are being released. This person could be experiencing an acute condition, a recent injury, or a current stressor, during the time of treatment.

2 Dark red or purple Older, deeper stagnations are being released. This coloration can indicate a site of surgery or a long-term stressor or an old injury, such as an injury from falling where the blood stagnation happened.

· What to take note after cupping treatment

1 Avoid Hot pool, steam treatment after cupping. Increased exposure to heat, can cause possibility of skin irritations, such as rash.

2 Avoid exercising.

3 Burns. First and second-degree burn can occurs during cupping. Should there be, approached with caution and be gentle with it, seek for medical help.

Avoid the above for at least 2-3 hours.
