Cupping is a common modality of healing within Traditional Chinese Medicine, TCM practitioners use therapies such as acupuncture with needles, moxibustion, Gua Sha (Scraping) and cupping to remove any stagnations of invasive pathogens – wind, cold, heat or dampness – that could alter the life energy in the body, known as Qi. Such interruptions in the flow of Qi and blood can alter a person’s wellness, which may result in a loss of function, or sensation, pain, and cause of other possibly disease.
The markings that result from cupping represent the release of these invasive materials. After multiple treatments, the intensity of their colour will typically lessen, indicating the progressive removal of such materials from the body.
It has been thought that the darker the colours, the deeper or more severe the stagnation.
