Common Digestive Problems




You are what you eat, digest, transform and absorb.


Many common health problems are rooted in the functions of digestion and absorption. These problems are well addressed by a change in diet using the principles of yin and yang to stimulate production of Qi and Xue. Below listed some of the common digestive issues, along with Chinese medicine diagnosis, possible causes and dietary solutions for stimulating healing and balance.


Symptoms: Fatigue or general exhaustion

Diagnosis: Spleen and stomach Qi deficiency

Possible Causes: Irregular meals, skipping meals, consuming too many cold, raw or cooling foods. Drinking cold drinks and drinking liquid when having meals.

Solutions: Eat cooked foods. Trying to have warm fruits such as peaches, raspberries, and cherries.


Symptoms: Poor appetite

Diagnosis: Spleen Qi deficiency

Possible Causes: Irregular eating, having too much sugar, cold raw, or cooling foods, intake of too much dairy which contribute and weaken the spleen function and digestion. Stress, emotional Upset and worries, chronic illness.

Solutions: Eat regular meals. Include congee or soft -cooked whole grains for meals. Include fruits that are more warming such as red dates, red grapes; Sweet carbohydrate vegetable such as pumpkin, sweet potato, carrot, cabbage. Pungent spices such as cinnamon, ginger, black pepper.


Symptoms: Excessive Appetite, Bade breath

Diagnosis: Stomach Heat

Possible Causes: Too many hot and spicy, fried, and grilled foods. Excessive coffee and alcohol consumption. Overeating. Excess long-term stress.

Solutions: Eliminate hot and spicy foods. Include vegetable with a cooling nature such as spinach, eggplant, akra.


Symptoms: Food Cravings

Diagnosis: Disharmony of stomach and spleen

Possible Causes: Fatigue overwork or overexertion. Eating late at night, eating too often. Unbalanced eating with too much salty sweet and fatty foods.

Solutions: Eating regular meals, include a balance of the five flavors as well as good quality oils, more dark leafy vegetables. Replace sweet cravings with vegetable like pumpkin, sweet potatoes, whole grains.


Symptoms: Bloated and poo digestion

Diagnosis: Spleen Yang deficiency and spleen dampness

Possible Causes: Overeating, eating too quickly. Eating food, you are sensitive to and cannot tolerate or digest, for example dairy. Eating while emotionally upset.

Solutions: Slow down your eating speed and chew well.


Symptoms: Nausea

Diagnosis: Rebellious stomach Qi

Possible Causes: Foods the body cannot digest well, causing fermentation and rotting in the stomach. Eating too quickly. Food poisoning leading to vomiting.

Solutions: Drink Ginger and tangerine Peel Tea. Add spices such as cloves to your cooking.



GINGER AND TANGERINE PEEL TEA 
3 Slices Gingerroot, Lightly crushes 
2 Strips dried tangerine peel
Liquid Honey – Optional 

1.      Bring 2 cups 500ml of water to a boil in a small saucepan. 
        Remove from heat. 
2.      Stir in ginger and tangerine Peel. 
3.      Cover and let stand for 10 minutes. 
4.      Strain into teacups. Stir in honey to Taste. 

The tangerine peel and ginger are both warming and soothe stomach upsets. 
 You can consider using this tea to boost digestion, warm the stomach and clear our phlegm. 
 In any case, you are coming down with a cold, add 1 tp 5ml dried mint along with the tangerine peel. 
 It will help the tea clear your head and throat discomfort.
